Rosita Serrano - Biography

Rosita Serrano (born June 14, 1914 [?] in Vina del Mar, Chile – died April 6, 1997 in Santiago, Chile)

The Chilean Nightingale's birth name was Maria-Martha-Ester Alduante del Campo. Her father was a diplomat and her mother, Sofia del Campo, was a very famous opera singer. In the 1930s, Serrano went to Europe with her parents. She stayed in Portugal and France. In 1936, she came to Berlin. In Europe she changed her name to Rosita Serrano. In Berlin Serrano got a record contract with Telefunken-Records. The German pianist and arranger Peter Kreuder discovered her and wrote lyrics for her. Her most successful record was "Roter Mohn", issued on the Telefunken label. Serrano sung both in German and Spanish, mostly fox trots and some tangos. Serrano also performed live on stage with the German swing orchestras of Kurt Hohenberger and Teddy Stauffer, two other Telefunken artists.

In 1943 Rosita Serrano went to Sweden for some concert dates, but at the end of her tour, the German Nazi government accused her of being a spy (which was not true) because she had done some charity concerts for Jewish refugees. Serrano did not return to Germany. She went back to Chile where she lived until her death. She toured the USA, Switzerland, and Northern Africa, but her German songs were very unpopular during the war.

In 1951 Rosita Serrano visited Germany again for several concert dates but the German audience disliked her appearance on stage. The Telefunken Record Company cancelled its record contract with her in 1953. What a pity, because Rosita Serrano was a great female singer with great abilities.
