 Julia Lee pretends to sing about vegetables and that may be the case in the first verse, but then she apparently turns to other topics, that is - like in many other songs of her repertoire - drugs and sex. According to some sources spinach was a slang term for marijuana in the 1930s, and earlier in the 20th century it was believed that marijuana endowed its users with super strength (so it was perhaps also a joke on the part of the writers of Popeye). Anyway this is not embarrassing by any means as Ms Lee sings quite clearly and confidently, obviously drenched with her own life experience - she was already 46 and had been performing for nearly 30 years when this recording was made.

The very catchy melody, however, had been used some years before, in the equally great song "Who Pumped the Wind in My Doughnut" (presumably meaning, "who made my girlfriend pregnant") by Washboard Sam aka Ham Gravy on Vocalion 03275 (Aug 1936):
