78 RPM Record
Notes Recorded August 4, 1927 at 408-410 State Street, Bristol, Tennessee on portable recording equipment. Produced by Ralph Peer, this was JR's first record. The artist always insisted that "The Soldier's Sweetheart" was the A-side (he had written this as a tribute to his best friend who was killed in Flanders), but Peer and Victor felt differently. Doubtful that JR would have recorded again, but several months later, he managed to persuade Peer to let him record some "Blue Yodels". These, and the fact that JR had run up a large hotel bill in Victor's name, were the deciding factor. The rest is history. N.B.: Sam Philips did the same with Elvis 26 years later, at Sun Records.
