The Brymm listed here as co-composer (actually, he was the lyricist) of Aunt Hagar's Children Blues was properly J. Tim Brymn. The Brymm mis-spelling was not uncommon, due largely to its appearance on the sheet music to this very popular blues tune. Historical records, such as census lists and his draft card, seem to favor the Brymn spelling as the correct one, however.

Brymn was among the black musicians who enlisted and made their marks playing with military bands in the European theater during World War I. He, and a handful of others such as Jim Europe and Noble Sissle, are credited with introducing "jazz" sounds to a wider audience. The few recordings of these pioneering groups favor ragtime rather than the freer forms of jazz that would follow, but there can be little doubt that the exposure of countless soldiers to their music was a catalyst for the widespread demand for "hot" music that turned the Original Dixieland Jazz Band into recording stars and a sought-after live attraction immediately upon their return to the United States.
