According to George Simon, this version of heartaches sold 3x more copies than the Victor version. Ted Weems said in his interview with George Simon that this record becoming a hit again was pretty bittersweet. When he recorded this song with Decca, his band wasn’t the big money maker it was in the 1920s so he was getting paid to record without royalties. Because of this he got pissed when the Decca version because a bigger hit than the Victor one (he was signed to Victor in 1947), and on top of that he and Victor's producers were kinda lost on what the follow-up record should be.

I just read a Billboard article from 1948 about a handful of radio DJ's that picked a 7 year old song (at the time) and played it, as an experiment. They played it a few times a day just to see what effect it had, and within no time at all, this 7 year old song that everyone forgot became a nationwide hit everywhere, enough to start the presses again and make a lot more copies.
(It wasn't this song though, it was a different one.)

This one has special meaning for me too. It was my mother's favourite record. Mum and dad and little Mickey migrated from England to New Zealand in 1947 via New York, Omaha and San Francisco where we were apparently stuck for a month waiting for a ship. Mum loved America (as you would) and this record was apparently playing constantly on the radio and jukeboxes. Many years later, I gave her a compilation LP with this track on it.

'Heartaches' was originally issued in 1938. One evening in Jan.1947 a North Carolina dj had a programme called Midnight Dance Party. He just picked this old record out of the boxes he had there and in no time it took off locally and then nationally; It peaked at No. One on the Billboard Best Seller Chart for thirteen weeks from March 3rd. 1947.
