 "It Ain't Gonna Rain No Mo'" was a humongous hit for Wendell Hall. It's hard, from our perspective, to understand why that should have been the case. Wendell Hall was essentially a vaudevillian and probably had personal charm that doesn't show up in the record. He may have had a fan base throughout the rural areas that his touring shows visited. Maybe he carried a trunk full of his records and sold them in the lobby.If you play the flip side, "The Red Headed Music Maker", you get a different sound. You can almost see the black-face make-up as he does his best minstrel show end man/Al Jolson/Eddie Cantor rip-off. Giving those guys their due for being energetic showmen, I still don't see what the big deal about them was. I suppose I never will.
