Hi molemilton, Met Jerry Lee on several occasions and one time he actually stated your 'quote', this would be in the mid 60s. Don't think much of Al, but 3 outa 4 ain't bad.

Bill, I believe that Jerry Lee claimed there have only ever been four real song stylists: Al Jolson, Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams and .... Jerry Lee Lewis.

Mickey, I have one Aussie Jimmie Rodgers 78 that I'll add in due course. A couple of years ago, I spent a few hours in a second-hand shop in WA where my daughter lives but I came away with nothing!

He was obviously very popular here in Australia too because his old Zonophone 78s used to turn up quite often here in second hand shops in the '60s and '70s. I suspect too that he was a major influence (along with later Hank Snow and Wilf Carter records) on a whole swag of 1940s Aussie country singer/guitarists including Slim Dusty.

These Jimmie Rodgers Zonophones are really attractive. Jerry Lee Lewis loved him and cut many of his songs including 'My old Pal' and turned it into a real belter without losing any of the song's character. I don't have any of Jimmies 78s, but have a cd boxset and an HMV EP.
He sure wrote and recorded some really good stuff in his short life.

This record must have sold extremely well when it was issued. I have three copies and it comes up for sale on eBay regularly.
