78 RPM copies of this release only accounted for 1.8 percent of total sales of this #1 smash, with 45 RPM's comprising 98.2 percent. This led Mercury vice president / treasurer Irwin H. Steinberg to announce in June 1958 (per BB, June 9, 1958) that his label would henceforth cease production of 78's.

slholzer 11th Oct 2015		Many of you are better equipped to comment on this than I am, and I trust if I'm off base you will correct me, but I am under the impression that most major labels had quit producing 78s sometime in 1957. Mercury would have been one of the last to reach this decision if they waited until 1958. Also, I'm assuming that this is limited to domestic production, as 78s were still commonly available in more backward markets of the world in the early 60s when the Beatles would in fact appear on the medium in some places.
