This was recorded on 15 March 1927 using the new mobile recording unit of The Gramophone Company. The release was enormously successful, not least thanks to the fine treble solo by the young Ernest Lough. Due to the high sales a second version had to be recorded to replace the 1927 recording in 1928.

The story of this record can be seen on recordedchurchmusic.org, including a documentary introduced by his son Robin Lough and a comparison of the start of the two recordings.
