Notes

Advertised as CR 623 but B side label carries a CR 616 number - maybe originally planned as two releases and later changed to one??

This is an unusual disc in several respects. The first aspect, the use of two differently numbered labels, might be better explained by a late decision to merge two previous releases into one, rather than a decision not to issue two sides and make one release out of the remainder. We would have a better idea of this if anybody has a two-sided copy of either CR-616 or CR-623 with its original pairing intact.

The reason why I think it is probably a later development is the use of the A side designations. The vast majority of Crystalette discs I've seen do not have side designations. I believe it was the original practice of the label and that it was much longer-lived than the subsequent use of side designations. The side designations appear to have been instituted at or within a few issues before CR-662. I don't know what the last number in the Crystalette series was, but I've not seen one higher than 663. Perhaps the unusual disc shown here is a symptom of the impending failure of Crystalette.

I have only one Crystalette issue in my database that appears both with and without side designations (CR-601). Otherwise, I have a copy of CR-626 alone among the pre-662 600's with A/B designations, and the two oddly paired sides illustrated here. I also have two examples of another numerical series, CR-61 and CR-62, with A/B sides. Although any Crystalette issue might have an A/B version, I would be surprised if they all do, and I'm guessing that the A/B versions are rarer than the non-A/B versions when they do exist.
