 Under the copyright laws of the day, copyright attached when a piece was published and registered. Martin may have written it in 1949 but done nothing with it until 1951 when, in the form we see here, it was published and registered. It made sense then, because copyrights were of much shorter duration and you could cover more of a tune's useful life if you waited to register it until it was actually at risk of being copied due to exposure to the general public. Today, copyright attaches at the moment of creation, with or without registration, and it outlives the author by a fixed span of years, making the date of registration less critical.

- In 1949, celebrated bandleader Freddy Martin composed “Go, Go, Go, Menlo!,” the School’s fight song sung at Homecoming today.
I'm not so sure about that date because of this copyright:

Also, if that cat# is an RCA matrix #, that would also support a 1951 release.
Curious as to why he composed this tune, I tried to track down a connection between Freddy and Menlo college, but have come up empty so far.
