Sharper image added. This shows the composers to be Slotkin and Hawkins.

Such a pity this was not available on a 45. Philips were a real pest at not issuing 45 versions until very late in the day.

 Very cheesy.

If anyone wants this really intensely, I just spotted a nice looking copy on offer for just 150 euros.

According to Paul Pelletier's Fontana singles guide (Record Information No. 8, November 1988), the label started in the UK from 1 January 1958. He quotes a Melody Maker news item from 19 November 1957 to that effect.

The first 10 releases (H 100 to H 109) were available in January 1958, with the exception of H 106 (February).

While I was at it, I added months of release for all the Fontana 78s in the database, with the exception of two for which the year is entered erroneously as 1957. This information should be reliable, as Pelletier was working in this case from the company files, on commission (Fontana was being re-launched in 1988 for the third time).

The first listing of Fontana H series issues in The New Records booklet was the January 1958 issue. It may be that Fontana took a month or two to get their product listed in The New Records booklets and first releases may well have been late 1957. Anyway the price guide on the last page of the Jan 1958 issue gives the H series as a 78 series (no mention of 45).

 Good answer.
I've looked there too, and also Record Collector says 1958.
I change it.

Good question , are Fontana issuing H numbers out of sequence as earlier numbers are here as later dates.

http://www.globaldogproductions.info/f/fontana-uk-1.html lists them from 1958 , is there any definitive early printed publication that would give confirmation of the introduction of the Fontana label into the UK ?

 Why 1958 Pridesale?

zabadak , yes/ no yes , its 163 002 TH , the 'International' Number of Fontana and Phillips. I am attempting to sort a database in order for Phillips Group and licenced issues 1955 to 1960 , that will be fun ...

Indeed 1H is / was Side One , 2H side two as an exention of on the smaller case printing of the international number

@Bill Mann -- given the fact that H.103 and H.112 are 1957, you are correct that 1956 is too early. I will request a correction to 1957

Is 1956 the correct year for the UK issue ? Apparently Marty Wilde asked Philips to issue this over here after hearing it in New York, so '56 would seem a little early. Whatever, this is certainly a thing of beauty .

Still a beautiful thing, JG! :-)

The "2H" at the end of the matrix number implies it's the B-side there, no?
