Notes

Rare UK limited edition promotional 78 rpm 10" vinyl single issued in an edition of 999 copies only to commemorate the opening of a new HMV store in Oxford Street, London. The 78 is in a die-cut, numbered picture sleeve with a printed date of 'May 18th 2000', when HMV moved across Oxford Street from # 363 Oxford Street to # 360. The front of the inner sleeve features photos of the HMV store through the ages along with a history of the store. On the other side there are informative biographies of Robbie Williams and Sir Edward Elgar.

The move across London's busiest shopping street marked the end of an era - the old shop at 363 was the company's inaugural outlet and the world's first dedicated record store when it was opened on 20 July 1921 by the composer/conductor Sir Edward Elgar. The relocation to # 360 after 79 years of trading was necessary to increase trading space; with 26,000 square feet of shop floor it was over twice the size of the original store.

In 2011 HMV closed its store at # 360, due to the recession and consumers choosing downloads instead of physical CDs. HMV retains a store close to Oxford Circus.

This release is possibly the last 78 made by EMI Records Ltd.

Hi I have no 711 of this record, issued to me when I worked for HMV back in 2000, with a signed letter from the MD. Anyone know if its worth anything? Thanks

I saw a copy at Spittalfields Market yesterday. Didn't know it existed. I thought about buying it to add to the site (before I knew it was here already) but I would have felt dirty.

Yes, yes, I know, It's got Robbie on it with Edward Elgar (Elgar!!!) - and there are many non-period touches - but it's still a good job and I would love to have one!

Perhaps, though, a mention that the orchestra on Side Two is actually conducted by Eddie wouldn't go amiss...

Now this is something rather different. I acquired my copy (No. 346) free from HMV.com in 2010 using my HMV card points.

I never imagined I'd be entering it into a 78 database in 2012!
