Twitster 25th Jan 2015		As the unit's European responsibilities were winding down at the end of the war, Glenn Miller's American Band Of The Allied Expeditionary Forces held an outdoor concert before 10,000 attendees on July 21, 1945 at the Supreme Headquarters of The Allied Expeditionary Forces (SHAEF) in Frankfurt a/Main, Germany. During the concert the unit was awarded the Meritorious Service Unit Plaque for superior performance of duty in the accomplishment of exceptionally difficult tasks during the period from July 13, 1944 to June 30, 1945. The band's commanding officer, Captain Don Haynes also received the Bronze Star. On July 24, 1945 the band arrived in LeHarve, France and were taken to Camp Herbert Tareyton (one of three debarkation camps in the area of the port), remaining there until its departure back to the States on August 4th. Its last concert on European soil was held at Camp Tareyton before 10,000 military personnel on July 28th. Upon docking back in the U. S. on August 12, the band was given a 30-day recuperation leave after which it was reassigned to responsibilities for the weekly NBC Radio broadcast series "I Sustain The Wings" beginning on September 29th. The final broadcast of the series was aired on November 17th. Final members of the band were discharged by January 15, 1946 and the Band was discontinued effective 12:01 a. m. on the same date.
