Not to his classical standard, though there are certain family members who've been known to belt out a number or two in a more "popular" fashion (or "Country & Western rubbish", as he'd endearingly condemn anything post-Elvis as !).

Lovely story, Billy. Does the singing gene persist in the family to this day?

This was disc was made by my Grandfather at a time (mid 1930's ?) when he was considering a career as a professional singer. One of my Uncles remembers :

"..."To Julia: Daisies", composed by Roger Quilter, recorded at the house of Leslie and Lillian's rather wealthy farming friends the Goulds, at Spring Grove in Loughton. The Goulds owned a recording machine, very scarce indeed at the time, decades before tape-recording.
Unfortunately the wax on which the recording was engraved is rather soft, which means that the quality will have seriously deteriorated. When Leslie died, we brothers clubbed together to get the recording transcribed onto tape, but were disappointed with the standard of reproduction (we knew that for the fee we paid, we should have received a much cleaner transcription).
Leslie had a beautiful voice, and was a very fine interpreter of music, but never had the volume to sing professionally -- he had difficulty being heard in quite a small school hall. He was a BBC Singer, which used to be quite a badge of musical status (there were only a dozen or so at any one time). They were expected to sing from manuscript at first sight, with almost no rehearsal, to very high standards indeed.
