 Dick Robertson has a very special place in my heart. In my opinion, he is one of the most under-rated recording artists of his time, and perhaps of all time. His vocal equipment was probably about average or perhaps a shade better, but it was never the kind of exceptional voice that a Vaughn Monroe or a Tony Bennett had. He had a good sense of rhythm, though, better than Bing Crosby's, and a good feel for how a song ought to go. He usually picked good material, too. One of the things that really endeared him to me was his habit of surrounding himself with the best hot players he could find and giving them space to play on his discs. He was the first recording artist to find a place in his back-up for one of my all-time favorite horn men, cornetist Bobby Hackett, who is with him on this disc.
