BILLBOARD reported in its March 1st, 1947, issue that somehow T Texas Tyler had become embroiled in a three-way tussle over his recording contract involving 4 Star, Coast, and Capitol. This originated from a dispute between Tyler and 4 Star over royalty payments. Believing that his recording contract was null and void, due to the violation over the royalty payments, Tyler felt free to explore his options. Somehow, he signed a tentative one-year contract with Coast Records early in 1947, and just to confuse matters further had signed with Capitol too. 4 Star had renewed his three-year contract in November 1946, and, because Tyler had continued to record for 4 Star after the breach of his contract and had continued to accept royalty payments from the label, it was argued that the belated contractual remittance of royalties did not compromise Tyler’s position with the label. This was the conclusion that the AFM reached too, the seven-day tardiness of royalty transfer was not sufficient grounds to dissolve Tyler’s ties with 4 Star.
In retrospect the whole affair appears contrived; the issue of the overdue payment of royalties took place when Clifford MacDonald was a leading figure at 4 Star. At the time of this contractual dispute MacDonald had become Tyler’s personal manager.
Clearly Tyler was obliged to eat humble pie when he recorded this statement, essentially, he was obliged to state that he had not signed with anyone else and that his recordings would continue to be issued by 4 Star.
