Vic Album P-161 - a copy of the 1st edition of the album is at present on ebay. 2 labels are shown (not Bethlehem) and these do not show the album number. That is, however, on the image of the album spine.
The Perry Como website says:
"Surprisingly, it's not generally known that the original recordings for Perry's first Christmas album date back to 1946 when it was released as a 4 record 78-rpm disc Musical Smart Set. All of these songs were recorded in August, 1946, but one song, "O Little Town of Bethlehem", was later dropped from the set and replaced by "White Christmas" recorded in 1947. In 1956, the revised collection was combined with another collection, "Around the Christmas Tree", recorded in 1953, under the original 1946 album title, to form Perry's first full RCA Victor 12" LP Christmas album."
Thus there are 2 versions of the 78 rpm album, of which the first was released in 1946, as could be expected from the cat. numbers.
"Bethlehem" is on youtube, with a good label image (can be copied?). It omits the album nr on the label, but this occurs more often at the time, as I have an image of 20-2081 without album nr, but present in P-169 (Freddy Martin).
In discogs is the 1946 Canadian release, a copy of the orig. US record.
According to the official Perry Como website all songs except for White Christmas were recorded in August 1946. White Christmas is a 1947 recording. Therefore the release date given here for this album can’t be right. Also the track listing here is for A-D indicating 4 sides, it should be from A-F (8 sides) [Corrected. mod]
