Re: enlarged hole

It was common for the centre hole to be fractionally too small. This usually resulted in the user forcing the 78 onto the centre spindle, either breaking out the centre hole, or weakening it so it crumbled out over time.

Shellac 78s are fairly weighty, and usually stay put once you centre them (if using a modern record player or changer - on a gramophone tracking at 200 grams you're outta luck :-)

45 red and 78 green solved - they were the guidelines issued (see some sleeves) for the flip-over stylus colour coding (BSR and Garrard followed it, presumably other manufacturers did also). This was posted by Whyperion in 45cat forum.

Scans of very minor publisher variations added. Incidentally, what does the word "Green" mean after "78 rpm" on most, if not all, Philips' 78s?

Added image of side 1 with the copyright control name on the bottom on one line, yes the centre hole has been enlarged (No idea?).
I have a few of these 78's with the enlarged hole, it makes it a little harder to centre it on the turntable to play these records.
