 Hi tmargraff. Thanks for posting. That's what I like about this site (and 45cat.com) - somebody like you with a personal connection eventually bobs up with a little bit more of the jigsaw. Can you tell us some more about your brother Fred and maybe the other group members?

 hi mickey - my older brother Fred played rhythm guitar in the Plaids - they disbanded because the lead singer, Lou Morelli, died from a heart condition. I don't remember much about the band other than the song 'Keeper of My Heart'...

 The DARL label lasted only about six months, from late 1956 until about March 1957, issuing only a dozen or so singles. The Plaids actually had at least three releases: 1001, 1003 and 1012. I thought maybe they were a mixed race group because several of their songs were written by a Tommy Gardner (who I thought might be the Thomas Gardner who left black doowop group The Dubs around this time) but having listened to their "Al-Lee-O, Al-Lee-Ay" on youtube (better known by the Ames Brothers) I can only hear easy-listening Italian-Americans so probably a different Tommy Gardner.

 This particular Plaids group is elusive - not really anything about them on the net that I can find. (Not even a Rod Stewart connection :) ) They had a second single on Darl 1003: "Halfway To Heaven"/"A-Lee-O Al-Lee-Ay". Anyway, Darl 1001 was on Alan Freed's Top 25 as early as November 1956 so release date may have to be revised. Tenor sax man Big Al Sears who owned Sylvia Publishing had been around for ever. He started out in the 1920s with Chick Webb and was a longtime member of Duke Ellington's band before evolving (devolving?) into an R&B honker for hire in the 1950s. By this stage he was leading Alan Freed's Rock & Roll Band (they had a couple of LPs on Coral). Anyway if there's a sax on this Plaids record, it's him. He was on the Barbie Gaye disc too.
