Bob and Alf's mother Emily entered the duo into a talent contest, for which the first prize was a recording contract with Columbia Records. They sang these two numbers and won. However, the contract did not materialise because Columbia already had a double act, Layton & Johnstone. This resultant private recording was the first made by the duo.
