| cyeaman SUBS 25th Jun 2023 | It seems that three takes of "Frankie and Johnny" and two takes of "Everybody Does It in Hawaii" were recorded and released on Victor V-38109. These were recorded on different dates and have different personnel, according to Rust's "Jazz Records". My copy of this record uses mx. BVE-58339-2 on Side A and mx. BVE-58338-1 on Side B. These were recorded on December 30, 1929. Both John Bolig and DAHR state that only take 4 of each track were issued on Victor V-38109. These were recorded on January 15, 1930. I haven't heard these side by side, but Rust states that Roy Smeck plays harmonica on "Frankie and Johnny" on the December but not the January date, even though the same label crediting Roy "Schmeck" on harmonica is present on both versions. YouTube videos of many of these exist, but the titles and comments associated with them contain errors. I've linked to a few examples here. | |
