Dr Doom SUBS 5th Apr 2018 | | BookAmanda Petrusich - Do Not Sell At Any Price: The Wild, Obsessive Hunt For The World's Rarest 78rpm Records (2014) | Rated 9/10With all the hype of a 'vinyl revival' there have been a great many books published about record collecting and record shops over the last 5 years and I think this is one of the best.
The writer originally planned to do a book about record collectors in general but when she started doing research interviews she soon discovered that in many respects 78s collectors are 'next level' and decided to just focus on them.
The level of passion and determination among the collectors she encounters is incredible. I think the book also benefits from being penned by a female entering a 99% male world of obsession. She manages to get caught up in the excitement of discovering long lost early century blues and esoteric music whilst remaining a sense of being an outside observer.
A recommended read for anyone who has ever wondered if their collecting habit has ever strayed into the realm of being slightly unhealthy!

Dr Doom SUBS 21st Apr 2017 | | BookMurray Bennett - Product 45 : Australian Punk / Post-Punk Record Covers (2015) | ReviewAn incredible book and an incredible labour of love.
Full of pages of wonderful OZ Punk, Post Punk and D.I.Y. singles some of which are so rare that I've no much chance of ever finding them in the UK. This book is the next best thing and with the added bonus of two previously unreleased coloured vinyl singles to listen to while I drool.
Alas this book hasn't managed to get large scale European distribution which is probably due to it's weight. It's an absolute monster!
So although I can't deny that this works out as a pretty expensive purchase for anyone based in the UK I still think it's worth every pound.

Dr Doom SUBS 28th Oct 2016 | | BookMichael Moynihan - Lords Of Chaos: The Bloody Rise Of The Satanic Metal Underground (1998) | Rated 9/10The fascinating tale of the rise of Black / Death / Doom Metal.
Murder, racism, homophobia, paganism, church-burning. This is not your average music book!
Recommended even to someone who finds that style of music unlistenable. It's a fascinating to read how in a scene rooted around extremity that some were willing to take things to their logical conclusions - Murder and/or suicide.

Dr Doom SUBS 26th Nov 2015 | | BookMario Panciera - 45 Revolutions (1976/1979) (2007) | Rated 10/10An incredible work. 99.9% of UK Punk and New Wave singles are here with exact release dates, issues, printing details - everything!
The attention to detail is incredible and apparently the book took over a decade to complete. I have to say I'm not surprised. Anyone who tracks down an original bass player to find out whether there were 300 or 500 of their self released white label hand stamped 7" deserves R.E.S.P.E.C.T
This book isn't cheap (if you can track it down at all) but it's worth every single penny. It oozes quality and the design and printing is lovely.
Can't wait for another volume!

Dr Doom SUBS 6th Nov 2015 | | BookChuck Klosterman - Fargö Rock City (2002) | Rated 9/10Just like Nick Hornby's Fever Pitch don't let the subject matter put you off. You may loathe heavy metal as much as football but you can still enjoy this book on a human level. It's pretty much about growing up thinking that all the excitement is happening somewhere else. A teenage mind confused by girls, hormones, small-town boredom and the 80s could find solace in the mindless fun of heavy metal. I expect the same novel will be written about Minecraft in ten years time…..

Dr Doom SUBS 30th Sep 2015 | | BookJan Pettersson - Labelography Volume 2 (2012) | Rated 9/10An incredibly detailed book.
Everything you need to know about the small differences in issues of records on the Deram, Harvest or Regal Zonophone labels and a whole lot you probably didn't need to know unless you work in a record shop!
Hopefully volume one will be re-printed or updated sometime soon.
