Guide - Adding Books

Adding books is easy and quick, but we ask you try and follow these guidelines.

Duplicates

Generally, there is a single page for each ISBN or book issue. Generally a change of cover artwork will signify a new book issue, however an indentical reprint does not require a new entry. Please search to ensure your book is not already on 45worlds.

Multiple Editions

All editions of a book are automatically grouped together. This is done by grouping the book's author and title. Please ensure you type the book title exactly as it appears on other editions of the book. To help you do this, a dropdown list of suggested book titles appears as you type.

Author Names and Pen Names

Please only type a single author for a book. If there are muliple authors then type "Various Authors". After you've added the book, you can add each of the co-authors indidivually using the "add missing info" feature. If the book has no author then please type [no author listed].

Do please add books using a single canonical version of an author's name, even if there is a variation of the name on the book cover. The name could be that which the author is best known, or how the author is referred to on Wikipedia, eg D. H. Lawrence, William Shakespeare, Margaret Atwood.

Some authors use write books under using a different name, these are called pen names. Please always use the author's real name when adding a book eg J.K. Rowling. A drop-down list of names appears when you type the authors name, to help with this. Further down the page is a separate box where you can type the pen name as used on the book cover, eg Robert Galbraith.

Occassionally a book with no author will give an editor the same billing as an author, eg their name is on the spine. In this case add the editor as if they were the author and submit a correction request to change the display from "author" to "editor".

Class Numbers

Class numbers are a Dewey Decimal-like system for classifying books into categories. However it is not the Dewey-Decimal system, instead we use a free 100% compatible system from oclc.org.

Images

We strongly request that you also submit an image of the book you're adding. This helps us verify the entry and makes the website more interesting.
