ppint. 30th Jul 2018		#1 of the not quite interminable xanth series. #1: "a spell for chameleon" (1977) (this book) #2: "the source of magic" (1979), q.v. #3: "castle roogna" (1979), q.v. #4: "centaur aisle" (1982), q.v. #5: "ogre, ogre" (1982), q.v. #6: "night mare" (1983), q.v. #7: "dragon on a pedestal" (1983), q.v. #8: "crewel lye: a caustic yarn" (1985), q.v. #9: "golem in the gears" (1986), q.v. #10: "vale of the vole" (1987), q.v. #11: "heaven cent" (1988), q.v. #12: "man from mundania" (1989), q.v. #13: "isle of view" (1990), q.v. #14: "question quest" (1991), q.v. #15: "the colour of her panties" (1992), q.v. #16: "demons don't dream" (1992), q.v. #17: "harpy thyme" (1993), q.v. #18: "geis of the gargoyle" (1994), q.v. #19: "roc and a hard place" (1995), q.v. & ff. . .° as the series was further extended, it tended towards degenerating into a punfest: but, as yr hmbl srppnt.'s not read but odd ones beyond #7, i cannot warrant *none* of the later novels° is worth reading. - the series was originated by ballantine books and became a phenomenally fast-selling series, one of the major assets of the random house publishing group. after nine best-selling novels piers anthony took the series to the hearst corporation's avon books - at the time saying he was doing this because avon had stuck with him as his publishers for his relatively poorly-selling other books, including the cluster series. - their sales may have helped raise the avon mmpb & william morrow h/cvr general publisher's value to the notice of that truly fine merkin citizen, rupert ''the dirty digger'' murdoch's harpercollins, who bought and absorbed them, but they dropped xanth after #15 - perhaps the title, "the colo(u)r of her panties", was judged too juvenile ? - tor books stepped in, and seem to've had no problems with - or qualms about - the series, but they stopped publishing them after #37, "esrever doom", in 2013, since which xanth novels've only seen expensive open road hardcover and yuppieback real book editions (& digitally), ttbomk. ° - they'd reached #40, last time i looked - is anybookcatter out there still reading 'em? . edit 15/11/2019: #42: will someone please turn the laxian key off! - ?!!??? ??? . edit 22/11/2022: #46: *please?*
