ppint. 28th Feb 2021		godfrey cave / penguin editions were (and probably are yet) published as instant remainders for ''firm sale'' (strictly non-returnable) distribution, primarily to remainder bookshop chains - and instant remainders were sold outside of the net books agreement, at prices heavily discounted below the retail prices printed upon them, or simply with no printed price. they are generally editions of out-of-copyright titles, or else of textual versions of titles that had been allowed through accident or oversight to fall out of copyright, or editions where still in-copyright term illustrations are omitted, etc., thus eliminating tiresome constraints upon the publishers, such as being required to obtain the copyright holders' including authors' consent to permit them to publish their work, which consents or licences tend to be conditional upon payment of royalties (including an advance payment upon these, and further royalty payments once the advance is earned out), which requires detailed accounting to the authors and their agents, etc, upon a regular schedule...
