paul elek was a first generation immigrant from a central european printing family, who was nearly bankrupted and evidently learned from this to keep the different branches of his businesses separate legal entities: paul elek ltd. and elek books ltd. share the one address, but would not have shared legal liabilities for debts, etc.
whether bestseller library was an imprint of one or the other of these, or a separate limited liability company, is not yet clear...
paul elek's publishing companies were bought by the granada group conglomerate, and became part of granada publishing, eventually sold to william collins sons ltd, glasgow, which itself was later bought in a bitterly-contested takeover battle by that truly fine merkin citizen, rupert ''the-dirty-digger'' murdoch and subsumed into the harpercollinspublishers division of his news corporation swag-bag. ''elek'' is apparently still one of their live imprints.
