Original work began in 1840, consisting of large hand painted folios. Completed in 4 years, (1844). The original "elephant folio", of "The Birds Of America", contained plates of 435 birds. They were reproduced by The Macmillan Company in "The Birds Of America", first published in 1937. This present book is designed to bring a selection of Audubon's paintings within the reach of all. The plates are reduced to a more convenient size, and the total number has been cut from 435 birds to 288 birds.
