the story is set mostly in eastern europe and in manchuria shortly after world war II, fairly early on in the cold war, and before the chinese invasion of south korea in reaction to the united nations' "police action" against the north korean invasion of the south.
it includes parts of varying importance for a number of characters met in a number of biggles and company's previous adventures, including "gimlet" and his gang of commandos.

the front cover art depicts a chance vought corsair fighter in red-centred raf roundels (with narrow yellow surround) for no apparent reason (the red centres and flashes were removed from all allied aircraft insignia in the far eastern theatre, to avoid confusion with japanese aircraft, and the raf did not operate the corsair after the end of the war, and consequent end of lend-lease, and no mention is made of the aircraft type in the story).
the rear cover art includes view of a short sunderland flying-boat, quite reasonable for a fictional "scorpion" development of this aeroplane.
