ppint. 22nd Oct 2020		simultaneous near-identical first avon books mmpb printings, first edition cover art by frank frazetta (credited) cover price 60¢ 176pp. including titles, indicia etc, end pp. advertising refer to printing history to see if carcass of copy held was canadadian- or merkin- printed no priority established nor liable to be, both stating first avon printing, july, 1968



ppint. 21st May 2018		the variant uk titles seem to've arisen via a misreading of the titles of the first uk p/b editions published by universal-tandem publishing co. ltd., either by their printers, or when a different manglement reissued the two books with new cover art, in redesigned covers. the error (or deliberate variation) was repeated when further fresh manglement reissued the two under the star/star books imprint of wyndham paperbacks/w. h. allen ltd., almost certainly through inertia, or ignorance, or a combination of the two. "the barbarian" was lost by pocket books, inc. from the title of #4 - whether deliberately or no, this deponent knoweth not.

ppint. 3rd Jun 2018		star books/w. h. allen/howard & wyndham's bottom front cover blurb or strap-line is not a sub-title and should^W has been deleted from the sub-title field: it is purely a promotional phrase stuck onto the package by the art dept. a sub-title is an alternate title given on the title page°: - e.g. in "the hobbit'', or ''there and back again", by j. r. r. tolkien, the sub-title is "there and back again". ° - and usually in the indicia; and may be repeated on the d-j and/or the covers (this comment is from another edition of this book)
