 second generation reprint horror anthology of nine short stories and the title novelette, derived from the 1949 pellegrini & cudahy first edition of twenty-one stories edited by dashiell hammett, overlapping with both of the previous two reprint anthologies derived by the new english library from the original: does not contain the twenty-first (and oldest) story, ''a woman alone with her soul'' by thomas bailey aldrich, that is omitted by all three derivative anthologies published in four square books by the new english library.
