Though they may not always be able to pronounce its name, there are many thousands of visitors, tourists and yachtsmen to whom it is the queen of the villages around Chichester Harbour and who have almost as much curiosity about its past as those who live there throughout the year. The author's interest in the subject first developed into a pre-occupation when she did the research, in the early 60s, for a documentary film about Bosham. Since then, her collection of old photographs, paintings and pieces of information has grown to the point where a book was the inevitable and highly-desirable outcome. From her own collection of nearly 400 old pictures of Bosham, plus a number of others loaned for the purpose, she has selected the evocative gallery reproduced here; and from her own researches, often with her tape-recorder, probing living memories, she has written the extensive captions. Her efforts, over some dozen years, will be warmly appreciated by Bosham folk and their seasonal visitors now that her work has been distilled into this first pictorial history of their village. In addition to its nostalgic impact and, in many cases, the artistic merit of the pictures reproduced, the book is a valuable contribution to the published history of Sussex. The first line of Domesday Book for Sussex reads-'King William holds Bosham .. .' It was an important place in 1086. They spelled it 'Boseham' then. If they had taken any photographs Mrs. Bromley-Martin would have found them, but fortunately the greatest changes Bosham has seen in 1,000 years have been within the period that she has been able to cover, so completely, with surviving pictures, records and recollections in this delightful book. For all those to whom Bosham is still important, this book is essential. Images
