This is an anonymously issued school edition of the complete works of Gaius Julius Caesar and his imitators, i.e., the Gallic War, books i-vii, Civil War, and the additional books that were written by or at least attributed to two of his officers, Aulus Hirtius Pansa and Gaius Oppius. These last books are the eighth book of the Gallic War, the Alexandrinian War, the African War, and the Spanish War.

While Hirtius probably wrote Gallic War viii and the Alexandrinian War, he may only have edited the remaining two. Oppius' alleged authorship of the African War is no longer considered credible. The title pages of this edition attribute all three sequels to Caesar's works, Alexandrinian War, the African War, and the Spanish War, only to Hirtius.

The foreword of this edition refers to two slightly older editions that it competes with, those by Franz van Oudendorp (1696-1761) and by Jacob Jeremias Oberlin (1735-1806). A first edition of this school edition was issued in 1761; this 1817 version is a reprint of the improved, second edition that first appeared in 1798.

Impensis Orphanotropei, Halae (at the expense of the Orphans' Home in Halle) refers to the orphanage and school founded in 1695 by Pietist university professor August Hermann Francke (1663–1727) in Halle, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. As a way to employ the orphans, Francke also founded a pharmacy, a printing office, a publishing house, a bookstore, and a science museum (a cabinet of curiosities). The Francke Foundations continue to be active.
