first edition published 1913 in hardcover by eveleigh nash, london, collects the first six stories only: any more would have been tricky;
second edition published 1947 in hardcover by mycroft & moran, london, adds the last three.

collection:

introduction by gerald suster, noted on the back cover as "author of "the literature of fear" ", but i find no other trace of this; he definitely did write "the legacy of the beast" (1988), on the life, work and influence of aleister crowley, and others.

ppint. 17th Feb 2018		notes. it was the "dennis wheatley library of the occult", not "collection of horror"... ..and mycroft & moran, thrid line in notes, was an imprint of arkham house, sauk city, wisconsin (usa), not london at all, at all - not even a london named thus by revolting colonialists. (think i somehow managed to submit the penultimate version rather than the finished one. not sure i could do that again deliberately, even if i really wanted to. . .)
