† - yr hmbl srppnt. chose "chessboard planet" as the title to use out of the three under which this short novel has been published, the other two being "the far reality", under which it was first published in book form°°, and its original title, "the fairy chessmen", as being more evocative of its sfnal nature, and as not only the popularity, but even knowledge of the existence of "fairy chess" - variant forms of chess with different rules, some involving different pieces and even a very restricted knowledge of the position of the other player's pieces - had faded since the forties and fifties, whilst "fairy" had become more widely used as a synonym for (male) homosexual, for a while. it included a note upon the existence and nature of fairy chess, and reference to a dover trade p/b available worldwide upon the subject.
