ppint. 17th Jan 2022		really stylish cover art by robert jonas (signed) cover price (none printed: almost all mmpbs were 25¢ for a long time, unless marked otherwise) 248pp? including titles, indica etc, end pp? this incarnation of penguin books usa set up by ian ballantine, gobin stair, etc. was excoriated by allen lane, for the crime of putting brightly-coloured artwork on the covers, and after a brief transition period of penguin-signet / signet-penguin & pelican-mentor / mentor-pelican imprints, became signet books (& mentor books), and eventually new american library (uk sister-company new english library, imprints including four square books) - before being bought by penguin uk (pearson longman) again in the late seventies/early eighties - and is now part of random penguin, owned by bertelsmann of germany, who'd bought random house and merged it with their transworld publishers (corgi books, bantam uk) over here, and with their merkin conglomerate, bantam doubleday dell across the pond... - and ian, and betty ballantine had set up the first merkin penguin, and bantam books, and ballantine books - all of them now wings of a very random penguin!
