 pan books p/b first printing, first uk p/b edition

pan books' uncommonly large print-runs for each printing of many of their p/b titles during this era of paper restrictions upon british publishers was achieved via a special relationship with an official in the ministry of information (prob'ly of production - but still, why spoil the opportunity to use the more ominous title?)°: pan books' manglement undertook to devote at least half of each print-run to the export market(s), in view of this omitting the usual uk cover prices from the front covers of ~half the covers; whilst the ministry permitted pan books to exceed the then usual paper restrictions - including upon obtaining paper from abroad, and even getting print-runs printed abroad - even, in france !!!.

° - publicity (advertising) for this official government campaign ran under the slogan, ''export - or die!''

cover price 2/- (on front cover of copies intended for uk, european, canadadian distribution)
absence of uk cover price on front cover image above suggests image is of a copy finished with only xxxxian price (on bottom of back cover), but only the original poster can confirm this.
