Alan Williams, a few associates and the Beatles journeyed to Hamburg. The band played at the Indra and resided at the back of the Bambi, a dingy film theatre. It was at the Indra, and later at the Kaiserkella, the group honed their skills over many, many stage hours.

The lades from Liverpool soon became part of Hamburg;s nightlife in clubs, bars and cafes, and along the lengthy Reeperbahn and all its sights.

They met all sorts, but importantly three German youngster: Astrid Kirchherr, Klaus Voormann and Jürgen Vollmer. They greatly influenced the Beatles, with their leather attire, hair style, books, films and art, and Stuart and Astrid forged a close bond.
