ppint. 21st Sep 2018		month of publication is from locus magazine (indicia gives only the year). it is earlier than the 9/1992 publication date in the indicia of the merkin warner books' hardcover first hardcover. sequel to "heavy time" (1991), q.v., during the period of the secession of the far/further stars stations' & planets' populations and the formation of their union, and of earth company, and earth company's reaction to this: building a fleet of interstellar warships, each capable of protecting earth company property and enforcing its orders. but something is going wrong, badly wrong, in the training of crews in the new hellburners and even in the trainers built for practice; and no-one wants the ships' pilots destroyed or driven mad out there in deep space - but everyone wants the armed ships out there as soon as possible, doing their job, protecting earth company trade and ensuring earth company orders are followed by the research, industrial and trading colonies they established, and by their administrative managements. and so pollard is saddled with the job of finding out what nearly killed dekker - and, even worse, coming up with the solution to the problem.
