In 1962, at the age of 15, Geoff Emerick landed his dream job as an assistant recording engineer at EMI’s Abbey Road Studios in London. At the time, the facility was world-renowned for classical recordings, but it was also the home of an obscure comedy label named Parlophone, run by producer George Martin. On just the second day there, Emerick was present as a scruffy-looking quartet from Liverpool called the Beatles came in for their first ever recording session. Their sound was rough, but the band made an indelible impression on EMI’s staffers & on young Emerick in particular, not least because of the way John and Paul confronted George Martin, insisting on recording a song they had written themselves, rather than the bland fare the label wanted. That song, Love Me Do, soon rocketed up the charts, & popular music has never been the same.

Over the next seven years, Emerick would work alongside the Beatles as they transformed from teenage amateurs into an international sensation unlike anything the world had ever known. At the age of 19, Emerick would be promoted to full engineer, charged with recording the group's groundbreaking album, Revolver. As he & the band pushed the limits of recording technology, he pioneered methods that created a new signature sound for the Beatles. From his innovative use of tape loops & vocal distortion (on Tomorrow Never Knows & backwards recording (I'm Only Sleeping to forging new microphone techniques for Ringo's drums & Paul's bass, Emerick's work would change the art of sound engineering. A year later the bar would be raised further still as he & the group recorded what many have called the greatest album of all time: Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

He takes you inside the creation of classic tracks from She Loves You to A Day in the Life, including the raucous recording sessions for Yellow Submarine ( featuring Mick Jagger and a chorus of hard-partying celebrities) and the first-ever worldwide live satellite broadcast, as a nervous John Lennon sings All You Need Is Love to an audience of millions. The book also provides rare insight into the relationships of John, Paul, George, and Ringo, revealing the complex and often contentious creative process of the band at work. Emerick explains how the relentless songwriting competition between John and Paul that fuelled the Beatles’ early success would later grow mean-spirited, leading the two to write and record separately. Beggars Road 29th Jan 2018		However, there was one very bright spot (for me) on the Grammy's tonight - Bernie Taupin was there and they showed him on camera (yes, EJ did perform "Tiny Dancer" w/ Miley Cyrus)... But honestly, how often have 'we' seen Taupin on TV?



Beggars Road 29th Jan 2018		Although, a little off-topic, only tonight while watching the Grammy's 'In Memoriam' segment did I learn of Ray Thomas' (The Moody Blues) passing. My musical 'idols' of yesteryear are disappearing like the dinosaurs. I will become one soon, I suppose. My sincerest & warmest feelings to Ray's family, friends & fans.
