John Winston Lennon was born on 9th October 1940 in Liverpool, England. He is, of course, best known as a member of the most successful rock band of all-time, The Beatles, but the focus of this book is on his career after The Beatles.

John was the first member of The Beatles to release music outside of the band, and his first single with Yoko ~ Give Peace A Chance ~ was credited to the Plastic Ono Band. John released one new studio album a year between 1970 and 1975. However, when his and Yoko Ono’s son Sean was born on 9th October 1975 ~ John’s thirty-fifth birthday ~ he decided to take a break from the music industry.

Tragically, when he was returning from a recording session at New York’s Record Plant studio with Yoko on 8th December 1980, John was shot four times, and was pronounced dead on his arrival at hospital. John was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

For the purposes of this book, to qualify as a Top 40 hit, a single or album must have entered the Top 40 chart in at least one of the featured countries. The Top 40 hits are detailed chronologically, according to the date they first entered the chart in one or more of the featured countries. Each Top 40 single and album is illustrated and the catalogue numbers and release dates are detailed for the UK and the United States, followed by the chart runs in each country.

The main listings are followed by ‘The Almost Top 40 Singles’, which gives an honourable mention to singles that peaked between no.41-50 in one or more countries, but which failed to enter the Top 40 in any. There is also a points-based list of the Top 20 singles and Top 20 albums, plus a fascinating Trivia section, which looks at the most successful singles and albums and in each of the featured countries.
