Lennon at Sea contains previously unpublished photos, maps, and extensive and well-documented research on the songs the former Beatle composed and recorded during his two months on Bermuda in 1980, many of which would make up his last album Double Fantsay.

The book is based on a passage from the play The Last Days of John Lennon published in the early nineties by Fred Seaman, a personal assistant of John Lennon, from his memoir with the Beatle.

The author has commented that, after publication of the book, he was sent a cease-and-desist letter by Yoko Ono's lawyers. The book's publicist, Jennifer Vanderslice, also received a a cease-and-desist letter. It is reported that 500 copies were produced before Yoko Ono's objections over photographic content. Apparently Donovan re-released the book in 2014 with those photos removed.
