From the inside cover:

"The First time I saw John Lennon was in the fall of 1971. He was standing with Yoko backstage at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem where had performed at a benefit.... A lot of people were circulating around them, snapping pictures. I remember John saying, 'What happens to all these pictures? We never see them.' I asked him, 'Do you really want to see mine? I live right around the corner from you.' He said, 'Slip them under the door then.' And I did."

Thus began a nine-year professional and personal relationship between the photographer Bob Gruen and John Lennon, which continued until Lennon's death on December 8, 1980. Listen To These Pictures is an album of one hundred and thirty-five photographs selected from the thousands that Gruen took of Lennon during that time.

The photographs show Lennon in some of his public moments and in many private ones: at the Statue of Liberty, working with Yoko and the Elephants' Memory Band, with his family, at home in the Dakota, holding his green card after winning permanent residency in the United States, with friends Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger, Rudolf Nureyev, Andy Warhol, and Phil Spector, among others, and at the Hit Factory recording Double Fantasy.

This collection includes some of the best-known and most-celebrated photographs ever taken of John Lennon, as well as many that have never been seen before. The accompanying text provides Bob Gruen's insights into his friend John's private life. Together, they present an intimate and extensive portrait. Bob Gruen was John Lennon and Yoko Ono's friend and personal photographer for nine years. He made several album covers, scores of portraits, and hundreds of informal photographs of them.
