but it sold extremely poorly, and piper's third fuzzynovel was rejected, repeatedly, and eventually lost, believed destroyed by him. he committed suicide, alas, in 1964.
when the two were republished by ace books in 1976, both with good cover art (by michael whelan), a third novel was commissioned (with authorisation):
and this, in turn, sold well enough for a second authorised fuzzynovel by another other hand to be commissioned:
d: "golden dream: a fuzzy odyssey" ardath mayhar (1982), q.v.
where fuzzymatters, for a while, rested.
then a "manuscript" - in fact his own typescript - of h. beam piper's original third fuzzynovel turned up in what had been presumed to be assorted junk in a trunk - and there was great excitement, and not a little fear; but, in due course,
#3: "fuzzies and other people" (1984), q.v. appeared, and fuzzyfans everywhere were duly delighted°.
° - if not a little exercised as to how - or even whether - to explain away inconsistencies between the developments as imagined and brought to life by william tuning and ardath mayhar, and those actually composed two decades earlier - but hitherto hidden and believed forever lost - by h. beam piper. . .
