ppint. 10th Sep 2020		the four ''lord tedric'' short novels or novellas were written by gordon eklund they are based on a short story and a novelette by edward e. (''e. e.'' (''doc'')) smith, ''tedric'' (ss) in other worlds vol.5 #3, 3/1953 ''lord tedric'' (ntte) in universe #4, 3/1954 these are marginally fantasy/sf, but primarily historical fiction, in which a young blacksmith is instructed by a time-traveller in the art of making better iron, and hence creates improved armour (& weapons), and proceeds to have adventures in his own time. the series was commissioned from gordon eklund by baronet publishing co., inc. for publication in tp/bs bearing cover art by gray morrow, but a baronet tp/b of #4 didn't appear before baronet publishing co. ceased publishing. sfaiaa all editions of all books in the series are copyright in the name of verna trestrail smith (?e. e. smith's widow?). they are somewhat variously entitled, sometimes being prefixed by ''lord tedric: '', etc., and most editions' front covers are emblazoned with the name of ''e. e. 'doc' smith'' above that of the actual author - and in much larger letters - sometimes giving ''e. e. ''doc'' smith'' as an actual, even the sole, author of the novel. the lord tedric tetralogy: #1: ''lord tedric'' (1978) (this novel) #2: ''(the) space pirates'' (1979), q.v. #3: ''(the) black knight of the iron sphere'' (1979), q.v. (variant apparent title ''lord tedric (iii): the black knight of the iron sphere'' (star books, uk 1979), q.v.) #4: ''alien realms'' (1980), q.v. plus a misguided omnibus bind-up of #1 & #4 (!): #o: ''lord tedric and alien realms'' (? (publication date of this bind-up yet to be confirmed)), q.v. (& no, star books/wyndham paperbacks/w. h. allen did not publish a bind-up of #3 & #2 - not sfaiaa...)
