ppint. 13th Mar 2021		form of his name used as his by-line by william bennett foster 1892-1967, teacher and author - and a real person, a point perhaps worth making, as fictionmags cast doubt upon this: he was prolific enough a writer of westerns, initially for the pulps, to perhaps have used one or more pseudonyms, but was not himself one. he was inspired to write by e. s. dillinger, superintendent of the springer, new mexico boys school (of correction) at which he taught showing him the cheque he'd just received for a western story he'd sold, and suggesting foster try his hand at it. he continued writing westerns after joining up in 1943 - to the army, this time, having served in the u.s. navy in the first world war - and on after being discharged in 1946 returning to albuquerque and to aileen, his wife, though he now concentrated on selling to the saturday evening post and to the slicks (these markets paying far better than the pulps), until 1956, by which time the pulps had died and the slicks were no longer very interested in westerns, which were perceived as ''old-fashioned''. he died in albuquerque in 1959; aileen died in 1986.
