 through the fifties, lawrence block supported himself writing soft porn (very mild by modern standards), learning to write fast and accurately for a variety of low-paying publishers. his plotted novels and shorter stories appearing under a number of pseudonyms.

in 1961, he decided part-way through that one he was writing would work as a "straight" crime novel, and have a chance of selling to fawcett's good medal imprint, which paid around four times the advance - and that against royalties on the full print run, not just net sales; he re-wrote and then completed it as such - and it worked: fawcett bought it. lawrence was able to throttle back from his hitherto hectic production pace of fifteen-to-twenty novels a year, to "merely" fast-but-good. gold medal's crime fiction customers - and readers - appreciated his work, especially the return of familiar characters as series began building.

his pseudonyms include ben christopher, ann campbell clark, lee duncan, jill emerson, lesley evans, don holliday, paul kavanagh, sheldon lord, andrew shaw.

eponymous tv series tie-in novel, may be a script novelisation - but equally, it may be an original tie-in novel; knowledgeable advice on this would be appreciated.
