Compiler's Note [extract]:

In choosing the articles and advertisements from Mersey Beat which best illustrated the early days of The Beatles I tried to select material which not only told the story of their rise to fame but which also caught the flavour of the times.

The gossip columns and ads in Mersey Beat did this perfectly and so, in another sense, this book could also be regarded as "The Best Of Mersey Beat" since Bill Harry's friendship with The Beatles and interest in their career meant that they dominated the newspaper from the very first issue.

He was able to get them to write for the paper and John Lennon even had an occasional column under the name "Beatcomber".

Lennon wasn't the only Beatle to write for the newspaper. Paul McCartney contributed two pieces on The Beatles' early days and so did Pete Best.

With over 90 issues to select from, this is obviously only a small selection of the articles and photographs which appeared in the magazine but as far as The Beatles go, it includes everything of importance on them that Mersey Beat ever published.
