ppint. 13th Dec 2022		ballantine books ltd. 1970 first printing, first uk p/b edition confusingly, the publishing history gives this as the may 1968 third printing, apparently referring to either the merkin mmpb printings, or the canadadian-carcassed copies, or some permutation or combination thereof. cover art by barbara remington b+w interior illustrations by keith henderson (1932) cover price 40p, 95c south africa, $1.25 australia, $1.25 new zealand 408pp. (check) including titles, indica etc, end pp. advertising

ppint. 30th Apr 2019		should^W has been reflagged uk as it is a ballantine books ltd. publication. unfortunately it has been shifted to pan/ballantine, which it is not: it is a ballantine book and it was published by ballantine books ltd. the actual canadadian-distributed, canadadian-carcassed printing bears both the $price of 95¢, which is obscured by a black square in top right corner of this uk edition, and the U7063 catalog number shared by both ballantine books inc.'s simultaneous north american printings that look elsewise very much like this uk p/b, but which cat# is likewise blotted out with a black rectangle. this bears a uk price of 40p printed on the back cover and was published by ballantine books ltd; it was only distributed in the uk and the british commonwealth by pan books ltd. it was not for sale in canada, despite being printed in canada for ballantine books ltd. ballantine books ltd. did not last very long, but did exist. derek stokes, "mr. dark they were and golden-eyed", was invited to pick up as many - mostly unopened - cartons of their books as he wanted when they closed their london office: it was more-or-less "just around the corner" from his shop, in soho.
