Two-wheeled contraptions called hobby-horses, like bicycles with no pedals, were popular before 1820. Then pedals were added, but an engine was more difficult. Stem engines were too cumbersome and gas engines were not much better. In 1869 a Frenchman called Michaux added a gas engine to a velocipede. But in the late 1870s the petrol engine opened the way to compact and quickly available power. The great pioneers of the new engines were Germans: Nicolaus Otto, Karl Benz, Gottlieb Daimler and Wihelm Maybach. The Granada Guides are a new series of compact reference books, perfect for bookshelf or pocket. Each handy volume contains the latest expert information on its subject, together with explanatory diagrams, brilliant colour illustrations, and a comprehensive index. Images
